That video clip is so powerful it makes me want to fail. It makes me feel like if I have not failed doing something great for Jesus … I am not “working” on something hard enough. Make sense?
By the way, I am a big fan of open wheel racing … CART, IRL and Formula One. I suddenly feel so “spiritual” after watching that. All of a sudden, the guilt of driving a BMW isn’t as strong as before
I agree with Julio, if I haven’t failed I’m not putting myself out there enough. A few years back I led a small group, and I never felt like it really took off like I thought it should (although the Lord worked some really cool stuff out of it). Now I am leading another group and things seem to be just gelling like it never did last time, even though I am doing mostly the same things. Bottom line, God is good and the giver of ALL things, without Him nothing is possible!
Julio, that makes sense to me, and that’s almost exactly my reaction as too. To run scared from failure is to neglect growth, neglect faith, or neglect God’s calling. Instead, we have to push back the fear and follow after Christ.
It’s interesting that God tells us to fear Him. Rather than giving in to our own selfish aim of not disappointing ourselves, we have to give up our self assessments and live to please Him.
About the BMW: you’ll have to give me a ride sometime. I love it when my friends have fancy cars.
Jeff, I never thought I’d work in a place that is so open to failure like Faith Promise. I really do sense from my leadership that they would rather me blow it on a project trying something big than never try at all.
It’s cool to hear how things are working in your group and cool that you would open yourself up to the potential of “failing” again. Thanks for your leadership!
Could it also be that we are afraid to fail because we have pride? How glorious it would be for us if we are the first to end up at the finish line. To end up in smoke during the race, is that not embarrasing? It is so …. “unAmerican” who cares about second place, let alone the one who did not finish (DNF in racing terms). Failing shows people that we did not have it together. The Christian life demands total abandon even if the possiblity of failure is so near. Christianity isn’t for wimps. One has to let go of his or her pride, his or her total self to claim the success that Jesus has for us. Yep, another one of those ….. you lose your total self to gain it back.
